Jet Blue – A Real System for Moms

Jet Blue, the newer airline known for more leg room and a television with every seat, is a living example of business systems. Started in 1999 to “bring humanity back to air travel,” Jet Blue created systems to reinvent customer service, maintain low fares and offer a first class experience for all aboard.

Sure, the company has experienced a few turbulent times, but altogether they have provided a smooth ride at lower costs. How have they been able to accomplish such a large task amidst gigantic competition from long-standing airlines? Simple. They thought outside the cockpit and recreated how an airline should work. They put ingenuity to the forefront and developed strategic business systems that lowered costs, bolstered employee moral and just simplified the structure of airlines.

For example, when you dial Jet Blue to make a reservation, you don't get a typical call center. Instead, you reach a stay-at-home mom working out of her home. That's right. Trained moms with a computer replace the big expensive call centers other airlines use. Moms love it, because they can stay home and enjoy part-time flexible work and Jet Blue has equal emotions, because they have happy employees and save money. This efficient system retains employees instead of what used to be a high-turnover position.

Moreover, Jet Blue insisted on sophisticated technology to replace physical flight manuals making Jet Blue the first paperless cockpit. All Jet Blue employees, even the captain, help clean the plane between flights eliminating the cost of a cleaning crew. And each and every flight is reviewed for takeoff and landing times and how long it took for the last bag to make it to the belt. All this and more in an effort to streamline a passenger's experience.

It shows. Last year, the US Department of Transportation awarded Jet Blue the best overall low-cost airline for customer satisfaction. Undoubtedly their success stems from the ability to rethink and design what everyone else never thought possible.

Business School for Moms

The story of Jet Blue shows moms how to think outside the box. As you strategically develop systems for your home, learn from others, but look for unconventional ways to manage and streamline your home operations. The skies the limit!
