Has anyone canned stewed tomatoes

Description: My dad is growing a very large garden full of tomatoes this year. He is hoping that I will volunteer to can them and make stewed tomatoes and salsa. I think that it might not be worth the timeor cost, since I have not canned before and don't have the supplies. Does anyone have have experience canning? is it hard? expensive? Can you give me ideas or recipes? I do love the idea of having great organic tomatoes to use all year long, that is an incentive for me me to maybe try.
