Learning to Count Money

ceoMom 101, Jennifer

I saw this worksheet and I thought it was really good info for parents who want to help their child learn to count money. Most kids learn to count money in first grade, but it can be really hard to learn. This is a great place for parents to help!

$ Money Practice $

-- Sort and identify coins by name and value

-- Count like coins. Choose a specific amount of money and write it down. Have your child show you the money using the coins.

-- Show your child the coins and have him/her write down the amount.

-- Play a matching game. Practice matching the front and back of the coins. You can also match money amounts; for example: How many pennies will you need to equal a dime? How many nickels will you need to equal 50 cents? If you have two quarters, how many dimes will equal the same amount?

Have fun! And be patient while teaching. It will take several times or weeks to master this skill.
