My cousin is "the sleep whisperer" and she swears by the book: "Healthy Sleep Habits, Happy Child" by Marc Weissbluth. His whole philosophy is great and worked so well for my second child. I would definitely read it.
Another method to try might be something to give comfort and security to your child. It sounds like anxiety might be at the root of their fears. Help them create a "lovie" -- something like a favorite blanket, animal, etc. that they can always have with them and can turn to for comfort instead of calling out for you. Encourage the "lovie's" use during the day and let your child know that you trust the lovie too. Give it a few special hugs when you need encouragement too.
One thing that also solved my youngest son's sleep fears and wake ups was to put my two youngest kids in a room by themselves. It was like magic, instant security. Keep working away at it. It is worth the effort when you get that first night of uninterrupted sleep!
