First thing, switch it all over to manual...don't be scared! You will be glad you did!

Basic elements on all cameras are Light and Time
Light - controlled by aperture (f/stop)
Time - how long, controlled by shutter speed (SS)
Aperture ranges from 1.4, 2.0, 2.8, 4.0, 5.6, 8.0, 11.0, 16, 22
The larger the number, the smaller the aperture.
First lesson: Pick a subject outside
1. You cannot use light meter
2. Use the Sunny 16 Rule -- here's a link to study it:

3. Determine the light it is and choose accordingly.
4. Remember to keep track of your SS and f/stop
