Where is Your Money Going?

ceoMom 621, Nancy

Do you know exactly where you spend every penny? Get a small spiral notebook and create pages with various spending categories such as food, clothing, transportation, entertainment, etc. Every time you spend money...even a penny...write it in under the appropriate category. Try this for 2 - 3 weeks and you could be surprised at how much you are really spending on the little things.

We tend to look at our big living expenses, but overlook the little ones. A dollar here, a dollar there...over time they add up. We discovered after doing this little exercise that we were averaging close to $200 a month on bottled water. If it would not have been in black and white we would not have even thought about it.

This is so true. After doing this in Quicken, we discovered my husband was spending over $250 a month on lunches. He now brings a sack lunch most of the time. We also learned I was spending too much money at Target every month. I only allow myself to shop their once a month and it's amazing how much we save. When you don't see it, you can't buy it. Regardless, always remember my favorite saying (from my mom): "The person who doesn't appreciate the penny doesn't deserve the dollar."
