If the Taekwondo master is not teaching your child about self-defense AND self-control, then you need to find a new master. My son began taking Taekwondo when he was seven and was taught all of these things. He was taught by a World Champion Taekwondo master, Master Jeung. I believe Master Jeung has since returned to Korea. My son under his teaching had his Jr. black belt by 12 and was competing in the national arena. Taekwondo is all about focus, self control, respect for yourself, your elders and others.
I know of several good dojungs in the SLC area. What matters now is how you are going to pursue his Taekwondo training.
