How to Celebrate Earth Day

ceoMom 101, Jennifer

Celebrating Earth Day is really fun for kids and moms alike. I thought I'd pass on a few simple ideas you can do to celebrate Earth Day with your kids and have a blast.

-- We're going to wear green and brown clothes or an outfit with flowers on it. Something earthy and spring like.

-- I'm going to get out all of our "Earth" books. Anything to do with flowers, nature, animals, etc.

-- We don't have any room to plant a new tree in our back yard, so this year we are planting bulbs. My girls will get to dig deep holes in the ground and get dirty. They are sure to love this! I just picked up a bag of 12 bulbs at Costco as part of my regular shopping. Easy.

-- As a craft, I am giving my girls each a tin can (like a green bean can all washed out). They will get to make a craft using the tin can and learn how to "reuse." They can make a pencil holder out of it, a bug home or a flower pot or whatever else they can imagine.

-- I'm going to have my girls sort my recycling bin. Kids love to sort!

-- We're going to turn the water off more and turn the lights out when we're not using a room. Kid's need these reminders as often as possible anyway.

-- We're going to walk to the park and not drive. We'll talk about creating clean energy and how one day cars won't need gas anymore.

-- On the way to the park, we're going to pick up the litter and trash that we find.

-- We're going to listen to Jack Johnson's "Reduce, Reuse, Recycle." It's one of my personal favorite songs. Yoga music would work too!

-- I'm going to let them water all my plants and not worry if water gets spilled on the floor. Then they can water the plants outside with the hose. Oh boy will they love that!

-- We're going to stop and smell the roses. Since roses are not in bloom yet, maybe we'll smell the blossoms on trees instead.

-- We're going to put extra bird seed out. My kids will love to sprinkle it all over the ground.

-- I'll let my kids help me cook a meal with all organic ingredients. They love to help cook!

-- And if there is any more time available, we'll watch a "Planet Earth" video.

I hope everyone has a wonderful Earth Day and may the spirit of Earth Day last all year long!

These are great ideas...too bad my kids already went to bed:o) These could be great summer activities, too! Thanks!

You must homeschool your kids! I don't know how you could have time to do them all, otherwise.

Two confessions: 1. We didn't get everything done on the list. 2. We're "off-track" right now, so the kids are out of school for two weeks. Haha! But really, we had a terrific day today! We spent the morning at our local tulip festival and the late afternoon horseback riding. We didn't make it to the park though and my daughter suggested we go tomorrow and pick up litter along the way. Every day should be Earth Day anyway, right?
