So You Want a Big House

ceoMom 101, Jennifer

For whatever reason, I've been sharing this story with several people as of late. I thought I'd also share it with you. It's great advice!

A friend of mine shared this with me as he was buying their first (and last) house. While other friends were buying big fancy houses or having dreams of such, my friend and his wife decided to buy a reasonable house they could easily afford with no desire of upgrading down the road.

Here's why: When my friend was young, a respected adult pulled him aside and gave him a life lesson. The man with experience suggested buying a small place, not getting tied down to a big house with big payments. Now you can really live, he explained. Make your house your base, a landing spot, but travel. See the world. Do the things you really want to do, because your life is not your house -- it is yours to live.

With so much competition to have bigger and better, this advice goes a long way. Why get strapped down to a big house? This not only includes having to pay for it, but maintaining it as well. Instead of mowing the large lawn, you could be lying out in the sun sipping lemonade. Instead of paying all the utilities, you could be buying a handmade bracelet on some distant beach. Think about it. What does your big house, or dream of such, take away? Live your life instead!
