I worried a ton about safety before we purchased our trampoline, but I have to say it is one of the best purchases we ever made. It is a beloved toy by my two-year old AND my twelve year old. They grow out of the playhouse and the sand pile, but never grow out of the trampoline. Whenever friends come over and they can't think of anything to do, the trampoline is an excellent ice-breaker. It's also good exercise.
We spent a little extra money and bought an extra large trampoline with eight sides. This is safer than a round one because you can jump on the straight sides and not be bounced by someone bouncing in the middle. This helps with safety (no acccidents in three years--cross my fingers) and means the whole family can jump together. I looked into digging a trampoline pit in my yard to keep it close to the ground, but it added a lot of extra money and some experts say it is better to not fall close to the ground so your body can have time to react before the fall. I'm not a doctor or a chiropractor, but this mom says YES to a trampoline. Our family loves it.
