I have been doing this for several years and honestly, can't remember where I got the idea.
On top of our dresser near our dirty clothes hamper in my bedroom there is a small glass bowl filled with large safety pins. Before my husband or I throw our socks in the hamper, we pin the toes of the socks together. They go through the washer and dryer this way and when I fold the laundry, our socks are already paired up! I don't pin them near the top anymore as the elastic would sometimes get a little pulled, but pinning at the toes has not been a problem at all.
I'd love for my kids to be able to do this someday as well, but for right now, they are too little for me to feel comfortable about them having safety pins. But, just knowing I don't have to pair up mine or my husband's socks is good enough for now!
