I just heard on a talk show about the importance of laughter. Laughing actually changes your brain chemistry and has a multitude of health benefits both mental and physical.
So seeing that I could use a little help in this area, I've been trying to add more humor to my day. I also want my kids to grow up feeling joy and knowing how to laugh. But this is actually harder to do than I thought it would be. It's easy to be light hearted and easy going, but laughing? That's hard to do unless something funny happens and it's sort of a challenge to just make something funny up when you're washing dishes or running errands. So I came up with a plan:
Since I'm not exactly always funny, why not make it my kid's job to make me laugh? I asked my daughter to do something silly during the day to make me laugh. She loves the challenge! Yesterday, while at a framing shop, she grabbed a frame about the size of her head, stuck her head inside it and started talking in a serious tone. It was hilarious! I laughed and she felt like she won over the world.
I see this strategy helping in two ways: 1. It helps me find more joy in my day when I'm sort of funny-boned challenged at times. And 2. It teaches my daughter to look for laughter and to learn how to create it.
So if you need a little more fun in your day, try this approach. At the very least, it'll make you smile.
