Valentine's Tradition: Heart Sugar Cookies

ceoMom 101, Jennifer

This is a simple, but wonderful and long lasting tradition. Every Valentine's Day, we make heart shaped sugar cookies with pink frosting. The kids can help make them (if you want) or they can help ice them. The cookies are fun to eat and they also make great Valentine's treats for friends and family.

This is our family secret recipe handed down by grandma:

Sugar Cookies
-- 3 1/4 cup flour
-- 1 teaspoon baking soda
-- 1 cup sugar
-- 1 egg
-- 1 teaspoon vanilla
-- 1/2 teaspoon salt
-- 1/2 cup butter
-- 1/2 cup sour cream

Sift together flour, soda and salt. In a large bowl combine remaining ingredients. Beat for two minutes. Add flour mixture and stir until well mixed. Roll out 1/4 inch thick on lightly floured board. Cut into desired shapes. Place on greased cookie sheet. Bake at 400 degrees for 5-6 minutes. May appear not done, but they are!

Makes 2 1/2 - 3 dozen cookies.

Icing
-- 1 cube butter, softened
-- 1 package of powered sugar
-- 1 cap full of vanilla
-- Add a little milk until creamy, but not runny
-- Add food coloring

This really has been such a fun tradition in our home! Happy Valentine's Day!

Yes, use a regular stick, which is 1/2 cup. Yay!

Sour cream? That is interesting. Though, I trust anything that comes from you. I will try it out this valentines.

I LOVE SUGAR COOKIES! Just wish they were good for you.

About the butter... you are talking about real butter right; not margarine? I saw that Cassie mentioned foil wrapped butter, but in my experience, only the margarine is foil wrapped.

If real butter, does it matter if it is salted or not? It comes both ways. If margarine, please give advice on your favorite brand.

Awe! Good question! Yes, use real butter. I use salted; just the regular type butter. I've never tried it with margarine, so I don't know if it would work or not. For the icing, make sure you don't add too much milk. The icing won't dry well if it's too runny. I've made that mistake several times. :)

Just a follow-up after making them: Today, I made both the BC Traditional Sugar cookies and your Sour Cream sugar cookies (I always love to compare). Anyhow, I found yours to be much better! Your cookies hold their shape very well and taste good.

I have a tip for less mess: Instead of rolling the dough onto a floured surface, roll it between two pieces of plastic wrap. Place the wrapped and rolled dough in the freezer for about 20 minutes, then cut-out your shapes.

Another tip is to bake on parchment paper (so, no need to grease you pan). You can re-use the same piece of parchment until you have baked all of your cookies. Besides having to clean another pan, you can move them easier and will not break your cookies in the process.

Great job Jen! Tell mom thanks for passing this along to you.
