When my grandma passed away several years ago, I was the lucky one to get the original copies of her journals and some love letters she and my grandpa sent to each other when they were courting. Reading through them, I realized how important it is to pass down your memories. There are so many questions I wish I could ask her and now it is too late.
I bought a regular journal for my mom and asked her to write down every memory she recalls from her life. Her first memory; the things she loved to do, meeting my father, fears, passions, etc.
I started one for myself because I want my son to know how I became the person I am. I started from my youth and am working my way through the years. I realize I have had a full life and this is going to take some time (I've only made it to about 10 years old). But, it is actually kind of fun!
I encourage you to do the same for your children. Unless we make an effort to tell them about ourselves growing up, they will never really know.
I'm actually hoping to come up with a list of questions to give to my mom, so she will not look at the project as a chore, but something fun. If you have any ideas on questions to ask, please post them.
