An easy way to reward good behavior

Rewarding good behavior is just as, if not more, effective than punishing or disciplining for bad behavior.

An effective way to look for the positive is to create a system in which your child earns tokens for good behavior and/or completed chores. Then he or she can redeem them for rewards.

As an example, we have a job chart for both of our girls. If they complete all the jobs every day, they get five tokens at the end of the week. Plus, they get tokens for good behavior like using their table manners, not throwing tantrums, etc. We designated 5 tokens = $1, 10 tokens = a book, manicure, etc., 15 tokens = a toy, etc. You get the picture.

They can choose to turn them in or save them up for something bigger.

When my daughters want something (a Webkinz seems to be the reward of choice) and they don't have quite enough tokens, we have no problems getting jobs done. And without having to ask them!

It also forces you to focus on rewarding good behavior rather than misbehavior.
