Going Green: Sandwich Bags

Divisions: Go Green!

Submitted by ceoMom 101, Jennifer

I never realized how bad sandwich bags are for the environment. I was just reading an article in the National Geographic Green Guide and it discusses how plastic bags don't break down in nature and the bags have been found in the stomachs of birds and other wildlife. In addition, many of the bags use #3 polyvinyl chloride (PVC), which contains chemicals you don't want near your food.

So here's the tip: If you have to use plastic sandwich bags, use bags with a "#4" number located on the box. These are the "best" bags to buy. Western Family sandwich bags are #4 bags, plus the carton comes from recycled material.

Other alternatives include using reusable containers and reusing the sandwich bags as well.

Uh Oh --I am addicted to plastic bags. I have all 3 sizes and I use them for everything. I guess I better start cutting back and looking for an alternative.
