As hard as this may seem, and it feels a bit cruel when you are in the midst of it, you may just have to let him/her cry themselves to sleep. Feed him a good dinner, and even offer him some whole milk right before bed (he is old enough to take it now) so that you know he is not hungry. Perhaps read a book or sing a song to calm him down and let him know it is bedtime, put some calming music on, and lay him down in his bed.
More likely than not, he is going to cry, and as much as you want to run in and pick him up, don't do it. He needs to learn to soothe himself. The first couple of nights it might take an hour or so of crying, but he will get the idea and go to sleep. The next night he won't cry so long. This is also what you do to get them to sleep through the night if they are not.
I have done this with my 10 month old little boy. When I am home, I do nurse him. But when it is just my husband, he lies him down in bed and leaves. Sometimes my baby will still cry for about 20 minutes, but he does lay down and go to sleep. He still wakes up at night sometimes as well, but if I leave him alone, he does go back to sleep.
Every once in awhile he will cry for about an hour, but he does go back to sleep, and I don't get left feeling like his binkie. Like I said, it is hard at first to let your baby cry, but when it works and you can see that they are able to go to sleep, it makes it a little easier the next time.
Good Luck!!!!!!!
Question: What should I do with my 12mo. who won't sleep unless nursed to sleep? Won't sleep for daddy...Should I wean cold turkey?
