We did this last year in the neighborhood and I thought it might also be a fun project for a birthday party!
Tie dying used to be a big mess, but if you use permanent markers, it's easy and the kids love it. You simply take a white shirt, twist your typical rubber bands around like you normally would. Then take permanent markers and literally color all around the rubber bands (but not under them). You can use as many colors as you want. Next, you dip the shirts in rubbing alcohol. Then let them dry out on the lawn in the sun.
When they are dry, you can take the rubber bands off and voila! A Tie dye shirt that you can wash!
