Decorating My Fireplace Mantel: Before and After

I recently asked a question on ceoMom about how to decorate my fireplace mantel. It was a challenge for me, because I'm not the best decorator and plus I have a window right above the mantel, which I didn't know how to work around.

I received two tips in response to my question. ceoMom 209, Amy suggested a garland (one that could be used year-round) and ceoMom 210, Aimee thought I needed to view my window as the "art piece," which I had never thought of. Instead of being frustrated with the window, I now love it! What better art than the sky and sunlight!

Aimee was kind enough to offer additional help and since we live in the same area, she came over and helped me decorate my mantel (I'll be forever grateful). She also taught me a few things that I wanted to pass on:

1. Always go in odd numbers, such as in threes. Put two items on one side and one item on the other. For example, you could put two candle sticks on one side and either one candle stick on the other or another larger piece such as a vase.

2. A garland does not need to drape across the entire mantel. Don't be afraid to cut it to the right length. Take some of the garland and wrap up an item such as the candle stick. Make the garland join in with what you have on display.

3. Less is more. Don't put a lot of nicknacks, etc. Instead use fewer bigger items to really make a statement.

4. Use the same color palette that is in the entire space. This might be a no-brainer, but in my case my kitchen and family room are joined. I was using different color palettes for each area instead of one. It just made the whole area pop when I used the same colors as in my kitchen. Now I need to get matching throw pillows!

I'm attaching two photos - a before and after. My camera is not the best and the window has too much sunlight for great photos, but I hope you get the idea.

Many thanks to ceoMom 210, Aimee and ceoMom 209, Amy for helping me!!!

It looks so great.. I really liked that you used more than one height also.. that your vase on the floor goes with your mantel as well.. Very expertly done! Nice job everyone! Also, your flowers are beautiful!
