To help your child meet more people when you move, get him involved in sports, swimming lessons, library time, cooking class, etc. You don't have to join everything, but join something. Anything that will help him to meet new kids. If there is a neighborhood summer playgroup or anything like that, it will help him to forget he is lonely and help him to get to know new kids.
But, just because he is getting to know new kids doesn't mean he can't continue to build his relationship with old friends. Help him to write letters, e-mail, draw pictures, or whatever to his friends from your old neighborhood. Help him "show" his old friends your new surroundings. It will help them both feel better about the move!
