In my home state of Oregon we have an annual "Beach Clean Up Day." You are assigned a part on the beach and while you get to stroll along, you pick up everything it does not belong on the ground. The same can be done around your neighborhood, local parks, schools and so on.
Make sure you choose areas safe enough for children to wonder about and always wear gloves when picking up stuff.
