Be Aware of Pressed Wood

ceoMom 101, Jennifer

I just read about the dangers of pressed wood furniture like shelving and tables for example. They release carcinogenic formaldehyde for years after purchase! It is best when picking furniture to find formaldehyde-free products made from solid wood and natural fibers.

That is frightening! Our kitchen table is made from pressed wood! It is pretty, but not if it is poisoning my children!

I purchased pressed wood shelving from Home Depot. After a month or two it began to emit horrible fumes which ultimately ruined all my clothing and also permeated the walls. I'm guessing the fumes were formaldehyde but I'm not sure. All I know is that they made me sick to my stomach and caused frequent headaches. I tried everything under the sun to remove the odors from my clothes, but nothing worked, not even dry cleaning. I now have to buy an entirely new wardrobe and have new sheetrock installed, all at great personal expense. I'm urging everyone I know not to buy pressed wood products, whether it be shelves or furniture. Why the US government even allows formaldehyde in such products is beyond me, since it is a known carcinogen and can also cause asthma and other problems.
