Protect Your Animals

I've been looking for a dog for the last few days and dived into researching. I found out very painful news about purchasing pets in a pet store. Let's just say that I am grateful that there are so many good people who try to find good homes for their pets instead of selling them to a pet store. 98% of the pets from a pet store were born and raised under horrible conditions. Their parents are ill treated and in terrible situations.

Oprah talked about puppy mills and you can find a lot of information about why you shouldn't support them (even if you don't know you are).

www.prisonersofgreed.org is a good place to become more educated. It helps you know what you need to do when looking for a breeder. It also tells you which pet stores to support.

I also learned that back yard breeders are sometimes not doing the best for their animals. If they haven't done genetic testing on their animals to see if they have chronic diseases like eye problems, heart problems, hip problems, arthritis, etc., then you don't want to purchase from them.

They sell you a puppy that looks happy and healthy and then you pay through the nose in medical bills to make your pet comfortable.

If you plan to breed your dog once or twice, make sure you've done the genetic testing on both the stud and the dame so that your puppies are healthy and happy. If you find extreme problems have your pet spayed or neutered. Control the disease spreading pet population and reduce the pain pets are in.

This is one of the more negotiable websites to find out important information on saving animals.

This is so sad to read, but something we all need to be aware of. I went to the website and read this:

"DO NOT, under any circumstances, buy a dog in a pet store. Our research establishes that 98% of the dogs in pet stores come from what we consider to be puppymllls. You are not saving that puppy, you are sentencing its parents to lives of misery."

I'm glad I've always wanted a dog from the Humane Society.

I'm so glad you are spreading the word- I worked in animal welfare for 5 years and let me tell you, people just don't get it. Having pets is a huge responsibility and one that can not be taken lightly. When looking for a great pet it is always best to look at the nmany shelters first. If you have patience you will definitely find what you are looking for. I have had three awesome golden retrievers from the pound that are well behaved, beautiful and rescued. Good luck with your search. If you want help with a particular breed let me know!
