Support Cage Free

ceoMom 101, Jennifer

I really appreciated the tip from ceoMom 329, Kristy Lynne about protecting our animals. She explained to us about "puppy mills" and how when we buy a dog at a pet store, we are supporting an industry of animal abuse.

I wanted to provide another tip on not supporting animal abuse. Most of us do not realize that when we buy eggs at the grocery store, that the hens producing these eggs are confined in very small cages for their entire lives and given hormones to produce as many eggs as possible.

I buy Nest Fresh eggs, a brand of eggs that are cage free. This means the hens are free to roam like regular farm hens. I pay a little more for these eggs, but it is well worth it to me. I refuse to support animal abuse and I would be if I were to buy the regular eggs. I find Nest Fresh at my regular grocery store and I'm sure there are similar brands out there.

Here are more details from Nest Fresh:

Nest Fresh differs significantly from the commodity egg producers who use four-to six-tier battery-cage facilities where the hens are kept in excruciatingly small spaces, are given sub-therapeutic antibiotics and are fed animal by-products. About 95 percent of all eggs sold in supermarkets come from hens that spend their entire lives in these conditions, creating a hazard for hen and human alike. Nest Fresh's vision is truly to change the way eggs are produced in the U.S.

ok..I love you and you know it... but when is it going to end? Pam Anderson is a part of a group fighting for the rights of chickens and when she was interviewed on the Tonight show I about died of laughter..the rights of chickens plueez..we are waging war, have a huge homeless population ,in extreme debt, 30million Americans without health insurance and starving children, we are facing a recession, and you are worried about caged chickens??
When I left for my vacation I arrived right after Hurricane Dolly rolled through Texas..I was struck at how good my life was and how I had really lost touch with the middle people..I forgot how it was to struggle to feed your family and make a mortgage and deal with rising energy costs and then have your home devastated by a hurricane..I got to see it firsthand..I will buy eggs..I do not care if they are by caged hens..and neither does some single mom trying to raise and feed her kids..I love you but I think there are bigger issues out there you could be devoting your time and great mind to.

I love you too, but I don't think we should turn our backs just because they are the little guys. It's not a big deal to buy cage free eggs instead of the eggs that perpetuate abuse. It's the little things that make a difference. Besides, if we can't free chickens, what chance do we have at freeing the world? I believe it's those who have the heart to take action, even for chickens, that end up making the world a better place. It's simply a matter of compassion.

Ps. I was just at my grandma's house and she commented on how they "just don't make eggs like they used to." She is famous for her lemon pies and she said for "some reason" the eggs nowadays don't beat like they used to (she can't get the foam peaks as well).

I just wanted to note that the cage-free eggs are also tons healthier. That's another great reason!
