Support Cage Free

ceoMom 101, Jennifer

I really appreciated the tip from ceoMom 329, Kristy Lynne about protecting our animals. She explained to us about "puppy mills" and how when we buy a dog at a pet store, we are supporting an industry of animal abuse.

I wanted to provide another tip on not supporting animal abuse. Most of us do not realize that when we buy eggs at the grocery store, that the hens producing these eggs are confined in very small cages for their entire lives and given hormones to produce as many eggs as possible.

I buy Nest Fresh eggs, a brand of eggs that are cage free. This means the hens are free to roam like regular farm hens. I pay a little more for these eggs, but it is well worth it to me. I refuse to support animal abuse and I would be if I were to buy the regular eggs. I find Nest Fresh at my regular grocery store and I'm sure there are similar brands out there.

Here are more details from Nest Fresh:

Nest Fresh differs significantly from the commodity egg producers who use four-to six-tier battery-cage facilities where the hens are kept in excruciatingly small spaces, are given sub-therapeutic antibiotics and are fed animal by-products. About 95 percent of all eggs sold in supermarkets come from hens that spend their entire lives in these conditions, creating a hazard for hen and human alike. Nest Fresh's vision is truly to change the way eggs are produced in the U.S.
