When it comes to working from home, let me tell you the best piece of advice I've ever received. A friend of mine once said: "First, find what you love to do -- Then figure out a way to make money doing it." This is great advice for us moms who want to work from home.
Let me give you an example: A few weeks ago, I got a nice homemade flier in my mailbox. It was for a lady down our street who started a little Art School in her home. She loves to draw and paint, so she decided to make art classes for toddlers and grade schoolers. It's really hard to find art classes for toddlers, so you know I'm signing my daughter up!
My neighbor was really good at marketing her flier too. We are on year-round school, so she made specific classes for when students are off-track and out of school for a few weeks. This way, the kids have something fun to do while school is out. Very clever of an idea!
My next door neighbor started a preschool and recently doubled her classes. She now offers morning and afternoon sessions for three and four years olds.
I know of a mom who made a home business making hair bows and she's done very well with this. I know another mom who has an eBay store that makes enough money to buy her kids all nice school clothes year round.
Some moms I know have also continued work on a freelance basis from their previous careers on a project basis. They have just let their former employers know they are available and the work comes in.
I also once heard Oprah say that writing is the best job for a mom to have, because you can do it any time any where, when the kids take naps or are at school, etc. There are lots of contract writing jobs on various websites that you can apply for. A lot of the writing jobs are technical writing, so you don't even need to use your imagination much. Writing is a great skill to have.
You just have to find a need and fill it, while doing what you love!
