We know our kids need to eat lots of fruit, etc. to keep their bottoms happy, but there are also things that might be causing constipation that could be removed from a child's diet should there be problems. Here are some of the biggest causes of constipation:
-- Processed foods! Anything with white flour, white rice, sugar (white and brown) and all pre-processed foods. In these processed foods, which make up most of a typical child's diet in the US, the fiber content has been stripped away (even in fruit snacks!).
-- Foods high in hydrogenated and animal fats. This includes cheese, ice cream, fatty meats, milk and snacks like chips and pizza. Again, these constitute a big portion of a typical child's diet.
-- High sugar drinks such as soda and fruit juice. The fiber in fruit juice gets removed during the processing.
Changing a child's diet is a big job, but it's also so much fun! I started with switching to soy milk (yes, I've done all the research on this topic) and going organic whenever possible. Then I took it one step at a time switching out and changing one item at a time. For example, I do not use white refined sugar. I now use organic sugars that retain the fiber. Make sure your kids get plenty of water too!
Going back to raw foods (unprocessed foods) is a gift to your child in so many ways. They are healthier, more resistant to getting sick, better able to function and think, and it helps in the bathroom too!
