Sometimes Less is More: Lessons From a 4-Year Old

ceoMom #214, Jody

There have been a couple experiences with my daughter lately that have taught me a lesson -- less is more.

The first one happened at the community easter egg hunt. We were so excited to go and hunt for eggs, but it wasn't an easter egg hunt at all; it was just old hard candy thrown out all over to go pick up. I was so mad! I called my mom on the phone and was just complaining. Then I looked down at my sweet 4 year old and she was so happy, just walking around with her basket so proud of the candy that she got. Yeah, it was old and she didn't end up eating any of it, but she was happy and she had fun. I got all mad and worked up over nothing.

The second one was when I was talking to my friend on the phone saying that I needed to save up money so we could go on a vacation. My little girl got so excited and said, "Maybe we can go to the fountain, the library or the park." Sometimes it is the littlest things that are the best - not the big expensive elaborate trips and things that we as adults think our kids need to have.

We need to just SIMPLIFY sometimes. I know this tip is long and so congrats if you made it this far!

I loved this! I took a class that taught that kids can't learn to cherrish becasuse they have too much. Thanks for sharing!

This is so totally true! Kids are fascinated by life - everything is new and beautiful. Gee, we have a lot to learn.

I've had the hardest time getting my five year old son to eat. I've tried having him help me make up our weekly menus and then we'd go to the grocery store where he'd help me pick out the food. This worked for a little while, but the excitement soon faded. Just when I thought I would have to settle with my son's diet of cold cereal and peanut butter, my sister-in-law found this great little cooking class for little kids and I decided to enroll him in it. HE LOVES IT! He is so adorable in his little apron and it is so fun to watch him him measuring, cracking eggs and mixing it all together. The best part is he eats what he makes and he's eating so much better at home!!! He is so excited to help me out in the kitchen, he has learned so much about different foods in his class and I am so relieved and happy that my little man is also my little chef!
