Halloween Safety

ceoMom #216, Heidi

Halloween is just around the corner, so I thought I'd share some of the Halloween safety information I have collected over the past years.

Make sure your child eats a full meal before going out for Halloween. This will help them control the temptation to eat their candy as they collect it. It will also save you from the effects of a child on a sugar high, but more importantly the candy should be brought home first, so it can be examined in good lighting.

Look for singular holes with pushed up and rough edges. Multiple holes with smooth edges are probably air bubbles from the manufacturing process. Never take a chance on candy you do not feel good about; it is not worth the extra worry.

Try using make-up this year instead of masks, which may impair your child's vision. Make sure costumes are hemmed up for mobility and safety. Use several small bags instead of one large bag to store their candy in, as this will also enhance their mobility. You and your child should have a flashlight, so you can be easily seen by motorists. Use reflective tape on your child's clothing to increase visibility.

Children under the age of ten should never trick or treat without adult supervision. Take your child only into familiar neighborhoods. Remind your child never go into a house or accept candy and gifts from strangers, even on Halloween.

Remember if you do NOT participate in Halloween activities, turn off your porch light for the evening. Give only processed food (store bought) to protect yourself from liabilities. Granola bars may be a healthy candy alternative.

Have a happy enjoyable Halloween!
