From October through January, I love picking up a pomegranate at the grocery store. It's a beautiful fruit that my whole family loves to eat. The kids especially enjoy picking them out and popping them in their mouths.
Pomegranates have ancient roots and have been around for thousands of years. They originally come from the Mediterranean region, but most in US markets come from California. Pomegranates also have many health benefits including increasing oxygen levels to the heart and decreasing unwanted blood clotting.
What is the proper way to open one? By scoring it. Simply cut off the top (about 2 inches across). Then score it down from the opening to the bottom. This means to cut slightly into the skin, but not through the skin. Score around like the lines on a basketball. Then gently pop it open. Enjoy!
