I'm always telling my children how much I love them, so I was shocked when my six-year old daughter said to me last week: "Mommy, do you still love me when I don't listen?" I replied: "Of course I still love you when you don't listen. I love you when you spill orange juice on the carpet and I would love you even if you threw all the Legos all over the floor, but don't do that, ok?" Then we both started laughing! She instantly seemed so relieved to know that I unconditionally love her. I was surprised that I somehow hadn't communicated that to her.
So my tip to all moms is to tell your kids right now that you love them NO MATTER WHAT. I suppose that is so obvious to us, but not necessarily to our children. I consequently explained this to my four-year old as well and she also beamed with joy.
