National Bird Day

ceoMom 216, Heidi

Tomorrow, January 5th 2009, is National Bird Day! All year long I enjoy a variety of birds nesting, feeding and singing in my back yard. Even now in the very cold of winter I can hear them chirp.

So I decided to introduce National Bird Day to my preschool students with a variety of activities. Included I printed coloring pages of birds, singing and reading about birds, pretending to be a bird (building a nest, flying like a bird, etc.) and listening to bird poems. Perhaps this will inspire you also to teach about National Bird Day to your children.

Here are some of my favorite bird poems:

The Jays
author unknown

"I know an old man
His name is Jay
He wears a blue coat
And a hat of gray.

He has a nice nest
High up in the tree
Where sits his dear mate
Content as can be.

There are four blue eggs
In the little brown nest
Which will soon be baby birds
Blue, like the rest."

How the Woodpecker Knows
author unknown

How does he know where to dig his hole?
The woodpecker there on the elm tree hole
How does he know what kind of limb
To use for a drum and to burrow in?
How does he find where the young grubs grow
I'd like to know?

The woodpecker flew to a maple limb
And drummed a tattoo that was fun for him
"No breakfast here! It's too hard for that."
He said, as down on his tail he sat,
"Just listen to this: rrrr rat-rat-tat."

The Chickadee-Dee
author unknown

Little darling of the snow
Careless how the winds may blow
Happy as a bird can be
Singing, oh, so cheerily.
Chickadee-dee! Chickadee-dee!

When the skies are cold and gray
When he trills his happiest lay
Through the clouds he seems to see
Hidden things to you and me.
Chickadee-dee! Chickadee-dee!

Very likely little birds
Have their thoughts too deep for words
But we know, and all agree
That the world would dreary be.
Without birds, dear Chickadee!
