The Babies Are Here!

The babies are born! There are four of them. Not sure if they are girls or boys, but they sure are fluffy little squirts with long legs. You should see them running around my back yard. Just two days old and they are already mobile and feeding on their own.

For those of you following my bird nest story, I just had to tell you the babies hatched! The four eggs nestled on a ground nest inches from one of our thin tree trunks, incubated for 29 days, one day longer than what is typical. It's a good thing too. We found a neighbor's cat in our back yard on day 28. He luckily didn't notice the eggs or the looming mommy bird ready to pounce the cat and peck it in wild flurry. We got the cat out and the next morning, the babies were born.

My husband and I can't stop watching them through our back window. We don't dare go back there too much. The mommy and daddy birds start hollering at us the second the door opens. I think they might peck us to death too if we get too close.

Beautiful birds. Beautiful babies. We watched every morning the daddy bird fly in and take his seat on top of the eggs. The mommy would fly off and they would take turns for a full month. One always with the eggs. Now they are all together, equally sharing in the protection and joy of their little bundles. At night when the temperature drops, we see the little squirts crawl under their mommy or daddy for warmth. All we need to know about parenting, we can learn from a bird.

How sweet, I'm jealous all we seem to have nesting in our yard are hornets and spiders. I just keep thinking about Charlote and her babies, but what I really want baby birds. What kind are they? What a great little family!
