My Nephews from Germany

Last Saturday evening, I waited in the airport for my sister and her two boys to arrive from Germany. I went as far as possible, past baggage claim, just feet from the big "Do Not Enter" sign located above two airport guardsmen in uniform. After such a long flight with two kids, I was sure they would be happy to be here. Then I spotted them at the very moment they spotted me. I ran the few feet or so left between us.

How big the boys had become. It had been six years since I last saw them. We went to the baggage claim and the boys were speaking half in English and half in German. What an experience and adventure to have them stay with us for a month! We got their bags and then went outside to meet my husband and girls who were circling the airport in anticipation. This would be their very first meeting ever.

Jillian shied away in the backseat, but kept peaking at the boys sitting right next to her. She couldn't believe her eyes. After so long of talking about their visit, here they were. Her cousins all the way from Germany. Brooklynn sat in her car seat in the middle row and kept looking back with a smirk on her face. She was silent for the first time all day. It was so exciting, they couldn't speak.

We arrived home and the boys, who I thought would be exhausted, ran through the house from room to room exploring and giggling. Their little German voices filled our home with such cuteness I could hardly stand it. I just smiled. I think they particularly liked our 104" movie screen with Xbox. I can thank my husband for that one! I could easily live without a TV, let alone a movie screen. But the boys loved it and I was glad to surprise them with such a treat.

The next day, the older of the two would say to me: "This is the most fabulous house I've ever been in." I of course thought he was referring to the Xbox, but he followed by saying: "I love the carpet!" Carpet in Germany usually means no padding and hard. I think he liked how it felt squishy beneath his feet.

It's been a fun week watching the cousins play together. We took a trip to a lake and discovered there was still snow on the trail (we were in sandals). We immediately got into a snowball fight -- I of course throwing the first snowball right at my sister's head (we're still sisters no matter how old we get). Then it was an all out war. We've gone bowling where I learned that boys are very competitive no matter what country they're from. I even found myself bowling extra bad just to make sure I wouldn't win. We went swimming and watched my nephews show off and make cannon balls off the side of the pool. "Watch this one, Tante Jenny" one would say as he jumped and flipped into the water. And then we spent an afternoon at a small aquarium where the boys got to touch a stingray -- something they couldn't do at their aquarium at home. Oh and of course they loved going to Sonic drive-in and ordering chicken strips like you did back in the 50's.

Next week it's off to Disneyland - a once in a lifetime event for our family where we will all be together. Grandma flies down, Uncle Brian will be there... I can't wait to see what my nephews think of Space Mountain, California Screamin and the Pirates of the Caribbean!
