The "Kini"
I'm more than a novice gardener. But at least I can say I tried this year. I planted two tomato plants, a pumpkin plant, zucchini, squash, eggplant, thyme and one that I forgot to mark (the mystery plant). That sounds pretty professional to me, but unfortunately I've already killed the eggplant and the mystery plant. The pumpkin isn't looking so hot either. My green thumb is a little pale.
So you can imagine my utter shock yesterday while I was watering my zucchini plant. I lifted one of the leaves to water underneath and it was unbelievable. There sat the biggest zucchini I had ever seen! I felt like Jack and the Beanstock.
I called for my daughters to stop what they were doing and rush to see the plant. This was a perfect learning opportunity for them. My six-year old screamed in excitement. My three-year old wanted it immediately. I gently pulled it off the vine and handed the monster zucchini to her. She carried it like a baby across the yard calling it her "kini."
A bit later I wondered where the zucchini went. I could see my girls playing at different parts of the yard - one hanging upside down on the play equipment - the other sitting on the ground doing something she was really into. I walked up to her and realized she was playing make-up with the zucchini. The zucchini was now sparkling with purple blush with a hint of cherry blossom lip gloss. It's her own little "kini."
What a fun experience for my girls and also for me. My thumb might be green after all!
